FIGURE
- GALLERY TWO (EARLY OILGRAPHS)
In 1994
I discovered a mixed-media technique that I call "oilgraphing."
A traditionally printed photograph is combined with oil paint and other
media to produce an archival original work that is similar to a painting,
yet retains it's inheirant photographic quality. Many of these pieces
are set upon a substrate such as metal, masonite or canvas.
These images were some of the first produced during that period. It was
before I began underpainting and worked nearly exclusively in monochromes.
In 1996 I began to
do the final stage of reducing the oil in front of an audience. I've continued
to do these "performances" ever since. The last image IF
ONLY was the second of such performances. (At 45 minutes it was also
the longest) Since that time, I've forced myself to finish the works in
the length of a few songs and always under 11 minutes.
