STATION V: The Reluctant Hand (Simon is Forced to Carry the Cross)

STATION V: The Reluctant Hand (Simon is Forced to Carry the Cross)
Mixed media oilgraph on canvas with blood // 36” x 36"
In this Station we see Simon of Syrene being forced to carry the cross at spear point. Often depicted as a selfless and willing participant, scripture tells a different story.
Oh, Simon...
in the years to come
you will be painted
the selfless aid
the loving cross bearer
for his Lord...
But it's a lie isn't it, Simon?
The truth is one of swords and
who is this stinking mess
of a man?
You were only chosen
because you were close
and could do the job
We all come to the cross, Simon
one way or another
But no one can blame your rage
No one wants to carry crosses
In this Station we are asked to contemplate, "What is the difficult but right thing you need to do, but don't want to?"
